Faces of Caliber: Camila Tavera Castro on Forging a New Path and Leading with Purpose
Starting over in a new country is not easy. Starting over professionally after having children, while navigating a new language and culture, is even harder. For Camila, it meant stepping into uncertainty while still believing she had something meaningful to contribute.
“I was very scared to start all over again. But at the same time, I always thought, this is possible.”
Originally from Colombia and educated in Costa Rica with backgrounds in both civil and industrial engineering, Camila spent years building experience before moving to Canada with her husband. Once her children were old enough to start school, she knew she wanted to return to her career. The challenge was rebuilding that path in a completely different environment.
When she first came across Caliber, she could see herself being part of the team. A simple conversation turned into an opportunity, and eventually a role.
“I knew I could contribute. I have a lot of passion and a lot of energy.”
That mindset has continued to shape how Camila approaches her work today. Her role involves coordinating RFIs, reviewing submittals, managing change documentation, and helping keep communication and scope aligned across projects. Much of the work requires organization, responsiveness, and the ability to keep moving when challenges or changes arise.
“My focus is understanding what needs to happen next and helping move the next piece of the puzzle forward.”
Camila approaches that responsibility with a strong sense of ownership. Whether supporting project operations, coordinating with teams, or helping navigate roadblocks, she focuses on staying present, prepared, and engaged in the work around her.
Working in a second language brought its own challenges early on. She remembers sitting in meetings trying to process everything being said while still learning English. Over time, that uncertainty turned into confidence through consistency, repetition, and determination.
That determination is something her team recognizes as well. Coworkers describe Camila as passionate, hardworking, and deeply invested in both the work and the people around her. She brings energy to the team, but also accountability and a willingness to step forward when something needs to get done.
For Camila, growth starts with mindset. She believes many obstacles become manageable when there is clarity, support, and a willingness to keep moving forward.
“If I have a clear vision with my team, I can guarantee you we will make sure things happen.”
Looking ahead, Camila sees herself continuing to grow into leadership while helping others navigate the same kinds of challenges she once faced herself. Her focus is not only on improving projects, but on helping create stronger teams and better systems that allow people to succeed together.
